Mel and I spent much of today cleaning the apartment, sorting through possessions and choosing what to keep, and what we no longer need. We've finally organized things like medical records, tax history, etc... boring stuff. On the more fun side, I went though a large plastic bin of things my parents kept over the years.
I sorted through report cards from kindergarten on up, old school papers, drawings, programs from plays, sheets of music, t-shirts, photos, buttons, ribbons, certificates... it goes on. Looking through all these relics was more fun and sentimental than I'd anticipated. More than a few things made me tear up or go running to grab Mel, working in the other room. When I was done, I'd read through just about everything, sorted photos into a shoe box, and put aside those items that I know I'll treasure and perhaps enjoy showing to our own children one day.
I've re-read "Goodnight Mood" and "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle," both of which are even better than I remembered, and I've perused countless tidbits of my own kindergarten through high school writing. I've found things I'll *never* part with, and I've decided it's time to move on and let many others go.
So, thanks Mom and Dad for saving all these little things and letting me have this marvelous experience.
:)
